Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic says he is working hard in training to get more first team starts for the Magpies but he says the lack of continuity hasn’t been easy for him.

The Serbian has had to fight for his place with Dwight Gayle and Daryl Murphy this season, and it has meant he has not not been able to play in a run of fixtures to play himself into form.

With Rafa Benitez playing only one striker, combined with th physical demands of the Championship, Mitrovic is quoted by the Chronicle as saying that he has found it a challenge:

“We are playing a demanding league, with lots of training and workout. First team football would mean a lot to me and I have been training hard. I have played a few games, not in continuity.”

The 22 year old was still called up by Serbia despite his lack of minutes on the field and he is expected to start against Georgia on Friday evening. He says though he is prepared and match fit to play for his country.

“Last time around, I wasn’t a first team regular either, but I was match fit and scoring goals for the national team. Playing for my country gives me motivation to train well.”

With Daryl Murphy reportedly suffering a recurrence of the calf injury he suffered earlier in the season, and with Gayle struggling for full fitness in recent weeks, Mitrovic may be hopeful of more starts when Newcastle face seven matches over the course of the next month.
