Newcastle winger Alex Gilliead is the subject of interest from two Football League clubs, according to the Chronicle.

The 21 year old spent the first half of the season on loan at League Two Luton Town, but made the loan switch to League One side Bradford City in the January transfer window. While the Bantams are interested in signing the midfielder permanently in the summer, Championship club Barnsley are also keen on  the player.

Gilliead impressed during his season long loan spell at Carlisle last season where he made 41 appearances, scoring five goals and providing eight assists. He played 21 games for Luton in the first half of the campaign, but scored only two goals.

Hatters boss Nathan Jones did however say he rated Gilliead as having the potential to be a Premier League player. His talents certainly didn’t go unnoticed in January when Bradford signed him.

Gilliead’s time at Valley Parade has however been hampered by a hamstring injury which has kept him out of the last three league games. He has impressed manager Stuart McCall enough to warrant interest over a permanent summer switch. Barnsley meanwhile have a track record of taking on Newcastle youngsters after picking up striker Adam Armstrong on a season long loan this season.
