Former Newcastle United player Mick Quinn has credited manager Rafa Benitez for the victories against promotion rivals in recent weeks.

The Spaniard has masterminded away wins against Brighton & Hove Albion and Huddersfield Town, while securing a solid away draw against Reading on Tuesday night. Writing in his column for the Chronicle, Quinn says that Benitez’s tactical acumen and calming presence on the touchline were hugely influential on getting the results:

“Rafa deserves credit for masterminding those three matches as well with brilliant tactics. That was the United boss at his finest and showed why he is one of the best in the business – and highlighted exactly why the club must do all they can to keep him at St James’ Park in the long run. He is a steady hand, who never gets ahead of himself and never panics.”

Newcastle are now three points ahead of second place Brighton, and nine points ahead of Huddersfield in third, giving the Magpies a good cushion heading into the last ten games of the season.

Rafa Benitez’s side will face Fulham at St James’ Park tomorrow afternoon. Slavisa Jokanovic’s side won the first game between the teams on the opening day of the season, and Newcastle will no doubt want to put that right, and take another step to securing promotion to the Premier League.
