Newcastle forward Ivan Toney says he is hoping to capitalise on his two goals for Scunthorpe United against Bradford City at the weekend to establish himself as a first team regular at Glanford Park.

The 21 year old spent the first half of the season on loan at fellow League One side Shrewsbury Town. During his spell with the Shrews he scored seven goals, and provided seven assists in 26 appearances.

Since moving on loan to Scunthorpe from the Magpies in January though, he has managed just four starts in 14 games. His goals in the 3-2 win over the Bantams on Sunday were his second and third for the club. They proved crucial in securing a vital victory for Graham Alexander’s side against one of their promotion rivals: Speaking to the Scunthorpe Telegraph, Toney said:

“It has been very tough not playing the last few games because when you go out on loan you want to be playing games. You have got to continue to show positivity and do a job when he does put you in the side and show why he put you in the side.”

“Every striker wants to be on the scoresheet and I got two on Sunday. It has come at an important time and I want to keep scoring for the side. I got my chance and I feel I have taken it with both hands.”

Scunthorpe will face Millwall next on Saturday at the Den, and Toney will no doubt be hopeful of making another start after his impressive display last weekend.
