Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow is happy that manager Rafa Benitez has shown faith in his abilities despite admitting he has made a couple of mistakes since the start of the season.

The 26 year old could have been third choice keeper this season with Benitez favouring Matz Sels at the start of the campaign, and Rob Elliot having been the regular starter for the Spaniard last campaign, but since late September, the former Nottingham Forest player has established himself as the number one. Speaking to the Shields Gazette, he says he is happy with how the season has turned out:

“I think it shows he’s got faith in me, which is nice. There have been one or two (mistakes) here or there, which I think you’re going to have as a goalkeeper over the course of the season. I’m not dwelling on one or two mistakes when I’ve continued to perform well throughout the season. As long as we finish the season off well, I can say I’ve had a good season here and that’s the main thing for me personally.”

Darlow has kept 14 clean sheets in all competitions in 31 appearances, conceding just 25 goals. He has done well considering the competition for places at the club for the goalkeeping position. Even the return of Rob Elliot to full fitness hasn’t seen him drop out of the starting eleven, while summer signing Matz Sels has been relegated to playing for the club’s Under 23s.
