Newcastle United secured a last-gasp winner to come from behind at the AMEX Stadium last night and give a monumental boost to their promotion charge under Rafa Benitez against Brighton.

After falling behind thanks to a dubious Glenn Murray penalty, the Magpies faced the prospect of kicking off on Saturday up to seven points behind the league leaders, though a fluky Mo Diame goal and an Ayoze Perez winner set the Toon top of the league.

Perhaps most impressively, Benitez’s side managed to beat their closest challengers without Dwight Gayle (again), with the forward just missing out as a result of a¬†hamstring injury. The Championship’s top scorer limped off against Aston Villa and his absence was cited as a worry for their chances on the south coast last night.

Still, his teammates managed to win without him and the 26-year-old has reacted on Twitter, praising his teammates for their outing.
