Newcastle are interested in keeping winger Yoan Gouffran beyond the end of the season, according to the Northern Echo.

The Frenchman’s current deal expires in the summer, and he is able to speak to any foreign clubs about signing for next season, but the local newspaper say that there is a possibility that he could yet stay at St James’ Park.

Gouffran has worked his way back into manager Rafa Benitez’s plans this campaign after being used sparingly by the Magpies last season. He has scored seven times in 38 games for the club, and it seems to have convinced Benitez that he is deserving of a new deal.

Contract talks were reopened in the New Year but there is believed to be some obstacles before any deal is agreed. Gouffran is now 30, and Newcastle are hesitant about giving the player a long term deal.

It seems promotion could prove decisive on whether talks are successful. The Frenchman is still on Premier League wages, and it is believed he would like a modest improvement on his current salary if he were to stay at the club.
