Newcastle pair Vurnon Anita and Yoan Gouffran could both yet stay at St James’ Park beyond the end of the season, according to the Chronicle.

The Dutch utility player and the French winger’s contracts expire in the summer and the Magpies are not prepared to offer the same amount the duo are currently paid by the club.

Manager Rafa Benitez is however said to want to keep both players if new contracts can be agreed. The Spaniard is believed to be keen on building a big squad if they are promoted to the Premier League.

Even if they do return to the top flight though, Anita and Gouffran will still be offered reduced terms, and that could lead to the pair leaving when their contract’s expire.

Much will depend on the interest from other clubs. If no other team can match Newcastle’s current terms, one or both could decide to remain on Tyneside.

Benitez has expressed his admiration for Anita’s versatility, and although he has employed the Dutch international mostly as a full back this season, his more regular position has been in central midfield in past seasons.

Gouffran meanwhile looked to be on the way out of the club at the start of the season, but he has managed to play 39 games this campaign, scoring seven goals and providing five assists.
