Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul is expecting to return to the North East when his loan spell at AZ Alkmaar comes to an end in the summer.

The Dutch international suffered a serious knee injury playing for the Netherlands in October 2015, and took a year to recover full fitness. Despite not playing for the Magpies under manager Rafa Benitez, the 28 year old was offered a contract extension before joining Ajax at the start of the season.

His loan at the Amsterdam club was cut short and he joined rival Eredivisie side AZ in January instead where he has played seven games so far in all competitions. Speaking to the Shields Gazette, Krul said he is not looking too far ahead, but with one year left on his contract at St James’ Park, he will return to Newcastle for pre-season:

“That puts me in a good position for the manager to look at me and where I’m at in his plans. The gaffer and the staff are watching all my games. They’re in touch once in a while. For me, it’s about showing that I’m back fit and back firing, and then, hopefully, Newcastle will be back in the Premier League as well. I’m just excited for the next few months, really.”

Considering the number of goalkeepers at Newcastle currently, Krul’s future is uncertain. With Karl Darlow, Matz Sels and Rob Elliot all vying for a first team spot, the Dutchman may be deemed surplus to requirements on his return from loan.
