Newcastle United will not attempt to land Swansea playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson in the summer, reports the Chronicle.

The Sun reported at the weekend that the Icelandic international was on Rafa Benitez’s radar but Chronicle reporter Mark Douglas says any move for the 27 year old is a non-starter.

Swansea turned down a £30million bid from China in January for Sigurdsson, and the Chronicle say the £15million fee quoted by the link in the Sun was far below the Swans’ asking price for the player.

It seems likely the Magpies are seeking more of an out and out striker with Burnley forward Andre Gray currently heading the queue. Sigurdsson has expressed his desire to move from Wales after stating he would like a switch to a “big club” but that club looks likely not to be Newcastle.

The attacking midfielder has scored nine goals in 31 appearances for Swansea this season, and he has also provided 11 assists, making him one of the Premier League’s hottest properties.
