The last few days have raised some slightly scary reports for Newcastle United fans as Rafa Benitez’s previously unquestioned autonomy at St. James’ Park was cast into doubt for the first time.
There had been suggestions Mike Ashely, who has, of course, proved a divisive and controversial figure amongst the Toon Army during his time as the Magpies’ owner had started to get involved in the Spaniard’s running of transfers at St. James’ Park.
However, the Chronicle have revealed that insiders say the Toon’s owner still speaks very highly of the former Real Madrid and that Benitez remains in control of transfer dealings for now.
Just how this will play out remains to be seen, though the feeling of this report is at least positive in light of the last few days. Obviously, the fact no deals have yet been able to be pushed ‘over the line’ as a certain smarmy south Londoner would say is worrying, though the January transfer market is a notoriously difficult time of year to find value for money.
