According to the Daily Mail, Everton midfielder James McCarthy remains a target for Newcastle United during the closing stages of the transfer window.

The Republic of Ireland international was touted as a potential target for the Toon Army over the course of the summer, though ultimately remained at Goodison Park, though he has since been used rather sparingly by Ronald Koeman.

Surely, the former Wigan man will see his playing time further limited following the arrival of Morgan Schneiderlin, as well as the emergence of Tom Davies in a Toffees midfield that also contains the likes of Idrissa Gueye and Gareth Barry.

That being said, Rafa Benitez has reportedly identified the 26-year-old as a potential option to build a strong midfield axis with Jonjo Shelvey with as the Magpies look to win promotion and remain competitive within the Premier League.

Sunderland are also mentioned as a potential suitor in the report, though there have recently been suggestions the Glasgow-born midfielder has rejected the chance to move to the Stadium of Light.
