As revealed by Chronicle journalist Andrew Musgrove, former Newcastle United winger Andros Townsend remains well thought of on Tyneside and is reportedly one of several names mentioned amid their January transfer plans.

It’s been a long month so far for power brokers at St. James’ Park, who have been unable to bring anyone in to aid Rafa Benitez’s promotion push and the Magpies have now been struck with an injury crisis.

Dwight Gayle, Vurnon Anita and Isaac Hayden all suffered injuries in the win over Brentford and the Spaniard is struggling in wide areas anyway, with Christian Atsu away on duty at the African Cup of Nations.

To that end, Townsend has been touted for a Toon return, though Musgrove does also explain the fact that the January transfer window comes with silly prices. The New Year sales are a notoriously difficult market to find value for money, with Newcastle having their fingers burnt in years gone by.

The 25-year-old was a hugely popular figure amongst the St. James’ Park faithful and one of the major reasons they staved off relegation for as long as they did, though has struggled at Crystal Palace since his move.
