It seems Newcastle United’s reported pursuit of Andros Townsend could be coming to an unfortunate end, with Times journalist George Caulkin revealing a deal is ‘unlikely’.

The 25-year-old has been strongly linked with a return to St. James’ Park of late after seeing his career stall somewhat at Crystal Palace, though there is believed to be haggling between the two parties over the nature of the deal.

Despite struggling to wholly convince in south London, Caulkin has revealed a move to bring him back to the North East is extremely unlikely, though he’s not quite sure what the problem is.

Townsend has previously been suggested to fancy a move back to the club he almost kept up last term, though top brass at St. James’ Park are understood to have made moves to bring Swansea City winger Modou Barrow to the club.

With Rafa Benitez currently light on wide options, the Gambian could be an alternative to the England international.
