Newcastle United’s transfer dealings with Crystal Palace took another turn today, with Times journalist George Caulkin claiming the Eagles are now looking at a Toon star.

With the Magpies strongly linked with a move for former winger Andros Townsend, the south London outfit are believed to have stood strong so far, though the pair are reported to have been in contact recently.

Sam Allardyce’s charges are understood to have asked the Toon Army about the notion of taking defender Chancel Mbemba on loan during the closing stages of the transfer window. Currently away on AFCON duty with DR Congo, the 22-year-old has found a regular starting berth hard to come by this term, despite his popularity amongst the club’s fans.

The burgeoning partnership of Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark has prevented the former Anderlecht ace from starting an awful lot under Rafa Benitez, seemingly prompting the Premier League strugglers to make an enquiry. For their part, the Magpies are thought to have then asked about Townsend once again.
