There’s just oh so much about on Tyneside right now as Newcastle United returned to the top of the Championship following a 4-0 thumping of Rotherham this afternoon.
The return of Jonjo Shelvey is quite rightly cited as one of the reasons the Magpies were able to run riot today, while Matt Ritchie has seemingly played his way out of the relative slump to have plagued him of late at the best possible time of the season.
Daryl Murphy is another who deserves all the plaudits he’ll inevitably get after hitting a crucial opener, though there’s another man who played a huge role in today’s thumping win. While he’s not always commanded a regular starting berth under Rafa Benitez, DeAndre Yedlin’s searing pace was a wonderful outlet.
Combined with Shelvey’s forward-thinking passes, the 23-year-old got up and down the flanks all day, breaking behind enemy lines. Though Vurnon Anita’s injury is, of course, a blow to the black and white cause, it can perhaps afford the ex-Tottenham man a real chance to stake a claim ahead of what is a potential return to the Premier League.
With that in mind, here’s what Twitter made of his performance today.
Enjoyed the game today. Yedlin has to play at home. Good partnership with Ritchie too #nufc

Two assists for #USMNT RB DeAndre Yedlin today. His speed is still a major asset and will serve him well if #NUFC get promoted.

Yedlin looks like he could outrun a bullet at times. #NUFC
