While 2017 barely got off to a rip-roaring start for Rafa Benitez and Newcastle United, the last two games have seen the Magpies score seven goals and concede just one.

Right now, things appear to be back on track for the Toon Army and the return to first-team action for Jonjo Shelvey is a monumental boost to everyone on Tyneside. The England international’s importance to Rafa Benitez’s promotion charge in black and white simply cannot be understated, though recent games have seen more heroes emerge.

One of the most interesting subplots to what’s been an enthralling campaign in the North East has been the form of Daryl Murphy. Having raised eyebrows upon his initial arrival from Ipswich, the 33-year-old has proved to be a saviour in recent weeks, hitting three goals in his last three games.

Well versed in the dark arts of the second tier, the Irishman has proved to be an effective replacement for the injured Dwight Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic of late, providing the Magpies with a battering ram up front, though one capable of a cultured finish or cute header.

Elsewhere, DeAndre Yedlin is looking increasingly important in the right-back berth, breaking behind enemy lines with aplomb. Despite largely operating as second fiddle to Vurnon Anita for most of the season thus far, the American was in wonderful form against Rotherham, both in an attacking and defensive sense.

He can provide another body going forward, bursting ahead of Matt Ritchie on the right when the Scot drifts inside. At their worst this season – whoever is playing up front – the Toon’s central striker all often looks extremely isolated, so having a player with pace to burn acting as another winger is of the utmost importance.

Crucially, the former Tottenham man is also improving the defensive side of his game, as proved in the crucial tackle (overshadowed by THAT Karl Darlow save) to prevent the Millers from an opener at St. James’ Park on Saturday.

Together, Yedlin’s lightning pace and Murphy’s aerial threat can help provide Benitez with an effective outlet to switch to, should Shelvey not play or be man-marked out of the game.

For most of the first-half, Rotherham did that well and the passing was once again ineffective, proving not at all dangerous. While Jonjo’s return is a boost, options emerging who provide a different way of playing is a huge lift to Newcastle United.

Both former Sunderland players, they may just give Benitez the Plan B he’s been searching for.
