As the January transfer window draws to a close, Newcastle United continue to be linked with a number of names as Rafa Benitez tries to bring in his first signing of the window.

Names such as Mo Barrow and Andros Townsend have been the most strongly mentioned of late, though reports from France suggest the Toon could look over to Ligue 1 once more to bring in attacking reinforcements.

According to L’Equipethe Magpies are amongst a number of English sides interested in Angers forward Nicolas Pepe, along with the likes of Liverpool and Everton. Currently away on international duty with the African Cup of Nations, his nation were recently knocked out so a move may be able to be completed earlier should talks take that turn.

Able to operate across the frontline, this report suggests the Reds have recently joined the race for the 21-year-old, despite the fact he’s only managed two goals this term. Marseille are another potential suitor mentioned within the report, with Les Scoïstes reportedly holding out for around €10m for the Ivorian.

That fee roughly equates to around £8.5m, though perhaps the idea of a club currently in the Championship competing with powerhouses of the Premier League is a tad ambitious.
