Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote is being lined up for a January exit as Spanish side Sporting Gijon attempt to land him, according to the Chronicle

The Ivorian midfielder is currently one of the longest serving players at St. James’ Park, though Saturday’s FA Cup clash away at Birmingham City could be the final appearance for him in black and white.

Out of contract at the end of the season, the 30-year-old midfielder is thought to be the subject of talks between Sporting director Nico Rodríguez and top brass, with the former reportedly jetting to England.

They are said to be hopeful the notion of offering him the chance to play in Spain’s top flight will be enough to reject lucrative paydays elsewhere as his time with the Toon Army draws to a close.

He’s made just one appearance in the league this term as more dynamic options emerge ahead of him and will surely not be a part of Rafa Benitez’s revolution.
