Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez could be tempted to make a move for Middlesbrough defender Daniel Ayala, according to the Sun

The Spaniard was linked with a move across the North East over the summer, though ultimately remained at the Riverside as they prepared for life in the Premier League.

Despite proving a hugely popular figure during Boro’s promotion from the second tier last term, the 27-year-old has lost his starting spot under Aitor Karanka to the likes of Ben Gibson and Calum Chambers.

Turkish giants Galatasaray are believed to be weighing up an £8.5m bid as he continues to sit on the bench at the Riverside, though the Magpies may make another move.

Benitez worked with the defender at Liverpool and was thought to have been on luring him to St. James’ Park before the season kicked off.

Since, he has largely relied on the likes of Ciaran Clark and Jamaal Lascelles as his first choice central defensive pairing.
