As revealed by Times journalist George Caulkin, Newcastle United fear midfielder Vurnon Anita will miss up to ‘2+ months’ after an injury picked up against Brentford over the course of the weekend.

The Dutchman has been a regular under Rafa Benitez in his promotion charge this season, largely operating as his first choice right-back, such is the nature of his versatility. After being brought on for the injured Isaac Hayden, he was then stretchered off at Griffin Park with ankle ligament damage.

In better news, however, Caulkin has also revealed Hayden’s ailment is not overly serious and there is reportedly an outside chance the former Arsenal ace could make a return against Rotherham this weekend.

Also, top scorer Dwight Gayle is only expected to miss 2-3 weeks after he limped off against the Bees, which is a monumental boost to Benitez’s title tilt on Tyneside. Potentially, the Championship’s top scorer could make a return for the huge clash with Brighton and Hove Albion later this month.
