Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has hinted there are deeper problems afoot in English football as he continues to struggle at the Etihad. The Spaniard has come in for a rather large amount of criticism of late as his side take battering after battering, though believes there are issues within the Premier League.

With quotes sourced by ESPNthe former Barcelona has been speaking about the notion of introducing a development league akin to the ones around the continent, such as the Spanish ‘B’ league. While that’s an idea previously raised, it has been avoided in this country so far.

He doesn’t seem to believe the youngsters in his ranks aren’t being tested properly and would seemingly like to see more competitiveness brought into lower age groups, suggesting the idea of playing U23 sides against the likes of Newcastle in the Championship would serve burgeoning talents better.

“In Spain the second teams in Barcelona and Madrid play in front of 40 or 45,000 people in Barcelona, Madrid. Here they play with no spectators”, said the legendary tactician.

“It’s not strong enough. That’s why it’s so difficult for the English people sometimes at big clubs like City. That for me is the real problem.”

“Why cannot we create Man City or Man Utd second team and not play in the Championship against Newcastle? Playing in front of these huge [crowds]. That is the future of English football.”
