Newcastle United have earmarked a midfielder from a fellow Championship side as a potential summer target, according to the Chronicle

The Magpies are thought to have keenly tracked the progress of Ben Osborn down at Nottingham Forest as the 22-year-old continues to impress in an otherwise rather average Reds side. There’s turmoil off the pitch at the City Ground, though any deal to bring the midfielder to Tyneside will reportedly have to wait until the summer.

Much has been made about Mike Ashley’s preference to buy players with sell-on value and, at just 22 years of age, the former England U20 international certainly represents a signing of that ilk. He recently hit headlines with a stunning free-kick against Bristol City recently, surely only increasing the Magpies’ reported interest in him.

Still, the Toon Army are understood to be focusing on short-term additions right now and will reportedly reassess the situation in the summer, should they win promotion to the Premier League.
