It was a poor day at the office for Newcastle United, who fell further behind league leaders Brighton and Hove Albion following a loss to Blackburn Rovers.
After dominating the home side in front of seven thousand travelling supporters, the Magpies ran out of ideas as the second half dragged on and Charlie Mulgrew fired in a close-range free kick.
It’s the second time the Scot has grabbed the winner over the Toon this season and his set-piece was all but hand-delivered to him by a certain Jack Colback.
The 27-year-old scythed down Marvin Emnes in a reckless foul on the edge of the box, rounding off a dreadful performance at Ewood Park on his behalf.
While the absence of Jonjo Shelvey is clearly having a huge impact of the Toon’s midfield, Colback’s awful performances are only making engine room ongoings even more laboured and lacklustre.
Surely, some big name midfield signings will have to come in over the course of the next month or so in order to rid of the former Sunderland man.
