It seems like so long ago now that eyebrows were initially raised upon the handing of Newcastle United’s iconic Number 9 shirt to summer signing Dwight Gayle.

While Aleksandar Mitrovic initially appeared to be the natural choice to take the number vacated by the dear departed Papisse Cisse, the two contested a penalty shootout to decide who would wear a number that means so much to the Toon Army as a whole.

Since, Gayle has scored 20 goals in the Championship to carry Rafa Benitez’s rebuild on Tyneside, while Mitrovic has rarely ever been handed a run of games in the starting eleven. While he’s always likely to make an appearance during the long and arduous Championship campaign, the form of Daryl Murphy poses an interesting question.

Is the Serbian now THIRD choice in the pecking order?

Murphy, another to have raised eyebrows when he touched down in black and white, has proved thoroughly crucial during the pair’s absence, scoring vital goals against the likes of Birmingham City, Brentford and Rotherham.

Well versed in this league, the Irishman is becoming vital to the Spaniard’s cause and seems to retain a trust from the 56-year-old not at all prevalent in Mitrovic.

So, what’s your answer?
