While reports linking Andros Townsend with a potential return to Newcastle United emerged only around two weeks ago now, the Magpies’ proposed move for the England international has become somewhat of a saga.
The 25-year-old is understood to have been of interest, though the Eagles are believed to have so far been against the notion of loaning the winger back to St. James’ Park as the January transfer window deadline approaches. Still, the saga took another turn yesterday following claims from Times journalist George Caulkin suggesting the south London side were interested in a move for Toon ace Chancel Mbemba.
In turn, those at St. James’ Park are thought to have asked AGAIN about Townsend’s situation and the notion of a swap deal has been talked about on social media. There’s little doubt Mbemba has seen his stock drop this term as the burgeoning partnership of Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark continues to impress, though did prove a popular player at Premier League level.
So, here’s how Twitter reacted.
Loan deal swap #mbemba and #Townsend I'd take that #NUFC

My view on the mbemba situation:
If rafa thinks it's a good idea for #NUFC to loan or sell him then that's good enough for me.

Mbemba away? Lord, I'd prefer it be Lascelles tbh #nufc

Hope we don't lose our heads & throw away Mbemba just becoz we are so "desperate" for Townsend, rather keep Mbemba & buy in the summer #NUFC

#nufc to loan townsend and loan out mbemba is dream scenario as long as mbemba doesn't go permanently. Needs first team football

#Mbemba is worth sacrificing on loan this season, but only to get #Townsend. Potential £40 million defender in the future #nufc
