According to the Daily Mirror, Newcastle United are closely monitoring Andros Townsend’s situation at Crystal Palace as he continues to struggle in south London.

The 25-year-old has been widely touted for a sensational Tyneside return over the past few days, having only joined the Magpies from Tottenham Hotspur in January 2016. During his short stint in black and white, the England international was a hugely popular figure amongst the Toon Army and was a major player in Rafa Benitez’s relegation fight, scoring some vital goals along the way.

Still, he quickly departed for Alan Pardew’s Eagles side upon the relegation and was immediately replaced by Matt Ritchie, while Dwight Gayle swapped the Thames for the Tyne in a separate deal.

Upon his return to the Big Smoke, the winger has failed to impress and Benitez’s black and white army are believed to have cast keen eyes over him this term. Current Palace chief Sam Allardyce is understood to have given him a major pep-talk after hoping his form would improve, though an upturn in performances is yet to happen.

The report claims the Magpies are keeping close eyes on his situation as they attempt to apply the finishing touches to what is hopefully a title charge in the Championship. They also suggest Newcastle will make a move for him should they be given any encouragement by Palace to do so.
