According to the Chronicle, Tim Krul could be allowed to make a quick-fire return to Newcastle United after failing to cut the mustard at Ajax in the six months he has spent on loan there.

After recovering from a lengthy injury, the 30-year-old penned a new deal with the Magpies and was sent straight to the Dutch capital as the likes of Karl Darlow, Matz Sels and Rob Elliot battle it out at St. James’ Park for the No.1 spot.

However, the Oranje international is struggling to get in front of Andre Onana for de Godenzonen and has made just five appearances in their reserve side since being drafted in as a replacement for Jasper Cillesse. Despite Krul’s standing as the Magpies’ No.1 for a number of years before his departure, the form of Darlow in particular will surely keep him at bay for the time being.

Elliot has proved to be a hugely popular figure with the Toon Army for a number of stunning performances prior to his own serious knee injury and will surely battle with Darlow when he’s back, while Rafa Benitez appears to fancy giving Sels a chance in cup competitions.
