According to the Chronicle (citing sources in Spain), Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote will depart the club towards the end of this week as a move to La Liga side Sporting Gijon reportedly edges closer.

The Ivory Coast international is out of contract in the summer and the only thing keeping him on Tyneside is the injury crisis currently wrecking Rafa Benitez’s squad at St. James’ Park. Despite playing a peripheral figure for the Magpies over the last few months, injuries to Isaac Hayden and Vurnon Anita seem to have extended his Toon career for another few days at least.

Benitez has reportedly blocked any move before as he looks to have enough players to play Birmingham City in the FA Cup 3rd-round tonight, though the Spanish side are said to be confident of luring the 30-year-old to their relegation scrap in Spain.

In fact, the report also carries quotes from radio station Radio Sporting that appear to be from Gijon president Javier Fernandez.

:“We are very close to closing the incorporation of Tiote and another player will come”, he said.
