Having watched his potential move to La Liga side Sporting Gijon reportedly break down, there have been some interesting reports from the Shields Gazette in regards to Cheick Tiote’s situation at Newcastle United.

The 30-year-old appeared to have played his final game for the Magpies in the FA Cup against Birmingham City last week and has made just three appearances this season, after seeing a myriad of potential moves away from St. James’ Park collapse.

Despite the fact he saw a move to Chinese Super League side Shanghai SIPG break down last summer, the report claims mega-rich clubs in the Far East do retain an interest in the Toon’s longest-serving outfield player. A number of European-based players have recently made moves to China due to the lucrative wages on offer and perhaps the Ivorian could soon do the same.

While he was widely regarded as one of the most ferocious defensive midfielders in the league a few years ago, the likes of Jack Colback, Isaac Hayden and Jonjo Shelvey are all preferred by Rafa Benitez.
