According to the Guardian, Newcastle United hope to reach a compromise with Crystal Palace over the idea of seeing Andros Townsend return to the club. The 25-year-old has been strongly linked with a shock return to Tyneside just six months after he left, having struggled in south London.

Current Eagles chief Sam Allardyce, who took over from the sacked Alan Pardew, is believed to have long-admired the England international’s game, though the winger has struggled to convince, capping off a strange year for him. After leaving Tottenham only 12 months ago to join the black and white cause, he came back a huge player under Rafa Benitez at St. James’ Park – proving to be a hugely popular figure amongst the Toon Army – before returning to London following the relegation in May.

After moving to Selhurst Park in a £13m deal, the Premier League strugglers are understood to be due to pay their last £3m instalment, though that could potentially become a loan fee from the Magpies, who may then shell out a further £10m in the summer should they got promoted.

Still, the idea of a loan initially is thought to be the sticking point right now.

It’s said those on Tyneside are hopeful of striking a deal with a week or so as Benitez attempts to ensure his side are promoted from the top tier.
