Newcastle United’s saviour in recent weeks, Daryl Murphy, has given insight as to what he feels like playing for a club of such stature at this stage of his career.

The 33-year-old was brought into the club by Rafa Benitez before the summer transfer window slammed shut, to the surprise of many. Still, he’s proved the difference in recent weeks, notching three goals in three games as the Magpies’ forward line took a battering through injuries.

It’s not just the fact he’s had the ball in the back of the net, however. The Irishman hit a crucial winner over Brentford last weekend, while the importance of his opener against Rotherham on Saturday on the stroke of half-time really cannot be understated.

With both Dwight Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic suffering injuries of late, the ex-Sunderland man is looking increasingly important to the Toon’s title tilt and genuinely seems delighted to be part of such a project.

“It’s unbelievable,” he told the Shields Gazette.

“Obviously, I scored two goals the previous week, but I said to my wife and kids there would be nothing better than to score at home in front of 52,000 fans and that was definitely the case. It was absolutely brilliant.”

“If someone had said to me a year ago that I’d do that I’d have laughed at them, I’d have thought they’d gone mad! “But here we are, and thankfully the gaffer took a chance on me.”
