It seems so long ago now that people initially questioned the decision to hand summer signing Dwight Gayle the iconic No.9 shirt at Newcastle United.
While the St. James’ Park faithful await Aleksandar Mitrovic to become the player we so want him to grow into, the £10m man is shouldering the goalscoring burden ludicrously well.
Clearly, the 26-year-old is a Premier League level forward and perhaps the most impressive aspect to his game has been his range of goals.
There have been tap-ins, free-kicks, screamers and clever goals throughout the course of the campaign so far and a recent hat-trick over Birmingham City took his tally up to 16.
That’s incredible considering he’s only started 15 games thus far, giving him a wonderfully lethal minute per goal ratio.
League minutes per goal ratio 16/17:

Lionel Messi – 85
Cristiano Ronaldo – 94#NUFC pic.twitter.com/axoKMKZBjQ— Easyodds.com (@easyodds) December 14, 2016
In fact, he has a better ratio this term than both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, notching a league goal every 80 minutes.
So, is Gayle really one of the most in-form strikers in Europe right now?
