Newcastle United and Sunderland are two of the club interested in signing Bordeaux defender Maxime Poundjé, according to French outlet SFR Sport

The Magpies are understood to have scouted the 24-year-old multiple times this season, as well as their bitter rivals Black Cats in recent months.

Injury has rocked the 24-year-old’s season in Ligue 1, having made just six appearances all season, though quality full-backs are reasonably hard to come by in the current climate of the transfer market.

The Toon don’t have the best buying history when purchasing from Les Girondins, with the capture Henri Saviet earlier this year proving to be an utter failure.

However, scouting seems to have improved under the new regime and targets appear to be more thought out than this time last year.

Whether or not top brass at St. James’ Park will be able to convince Poundjé to move to the Championship instead of the Premier League remains to be seen, though both are said to be keen.
