Over the course of the summer, Rafa Benitez conducted a huge rebuild on Tyneside to ensure he had a Newcastle United side capable of dealing with the long and arduous Championship campaign.

While the Spaniard has a wealth of options available to him at St. James’ Park, and has proved during his rotation policy that no one is guaranteed a place, it’s hard to see a midfielder as good as Jonjo Shelvey available to the former Liverpool and Real Madrid coach.

Sent off against Nottingham Forest, the England international will miss the next three games, though the Magpies are believed to want to appeal his red card at the City Ground during the 1-2 reversal to the Reds.

Despite being dropped by Benitez towards the end of last season, the 24-year-old has been perhaps the Toon’s most important player this term and is clearly a cut above the Championship when on form.

He’ll be a huge loss over the course of the frantic festive period, and while there’s no direct replacement, there are a couple of ways to replace him.

So, considering all of this, here are TWO ways for Newcastle to replace Shelvey.
