Though there were more than a few impressive performances yesterday as Newcastle thumped Birmingham City, the match ball went to Dwight Gayle.

The Toon’s new No.9 took his tally with 16 goals for the season with a clinical hat-trick against the Blues yesterday, further proving his worth in shouldering the burden that particular shirt carries.

He may take a few chances to warm up, but the 26-year-old is fast emerging as one of the most popular Magpies marksmen since Alan Shearer.

Following his three goals against those from the second city yesterday, a stunning stat in regards to Gayle’s form has emerged.

This season, he has notched a Championship goal every 80 mins, hitting 16 times in just 15 starts since his move.

While the world awaits Aleksandar Mitrovic catching alight as we all hope he really can, Gayle is sure making a good job of keeping the Toon in the goals.

So, how far can he go? Can he get upwards of 30 this season?
