Newcastle United could be handed a major blow as midfielder Jonjo Shelvey faces an FA charge of misconduct, according to North East journalist Martin Hardy.

The England international has been in imperious form for the Toon Army this season, with Sky pundit Ian Holloway recently describing him as the best player to ever ply his trade in England’s second tier.

He’s been an ever-present in Rafa Benitez’s Magpies side this term, notching three goals and registering a further 5 assists in 13 games thus far.

However, Hardy reveals the former Liverpool and Swansea City pass master’s charge is also related to an aggravated breach in relation to ethnicity during the recent clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Any ban for the 24-year-old would be a huge blow for the Magpies ahead of a crunch few weeks as they travel to fellow Championship high-flyers Leeds United, as well as the EFL Cup quarter-final clash with Hull City.
