Newcastle United had scouts in attendance during last night’s Champions League action, according to Portugal based journalist Tom Kundert

The Toon Army reportedly had officials running the rule over Benfica’s clash with Dynamo Kiev in Lisbon last night, a game Águias won 1-0 over their Ukranian opposition.

Despite their standing as a Championship side, Magpies legend Lee Clark recently stated he believes the Tyneside titans will indeed be ready to attract top talent with Rafa Benitez at the helm.

Only last season did the club tempt the likes of Chancel Mbemba and Aleksandar Mitrovic from CL side Anderlecht, with both signings proving to be hits at St. James’ Park.

The subject of their scouting expedition is not revealed, though they were not the only North East side to send prying eyes.

Sunderland and Middlesbrough are also thought to have had representatives at the Estádio da Luz, as well as Championship rivals Aston Villa.
