Though he’s currently entrenched in Newcastle’s Championship campaign, there’s little doubt Rafa Benitez remains a huge presence amongst Liverpool fans.
Perhaps his tenure at Anfield ended rather sourly, though the hands of time have seemingly soothed relations between the Spaniard and the Kop of late.
Cheered by their fans as the Toon visited Merseyside towards the end of last season, the 56-year-old has shared his thoughts on the Reds’ barnstorming Premier League form.
Sitting atop the Premier League under Jurgen Klopp, the man who led Liverpool to their fifth European Cup has seemingly been impressed by the charismatic German coach.
Speaking to Sky Bet’s YouTube channel (with quotes sourced by HITC), Benitez has revealed he is delighted to see his former charges doing well.
With the Magpies a division below Liverpool this season, the former Inter Milan and Real Madrid coach is free to keep an eye out for his old employers, though has warned against the strength of the Premier League.
“They are doing well but we know that the Premier League has very strong teams, especially at the top of the table,” Benitez said.
“But I’m really pleased to see Liverpool doing well and Newcastle doing well.”
