Ayoze Perez is counting the hours down till Saturday’s visit from Blackburn Rovers.

Yesterday’s 2-0 win away to Leeds United opened up a five point lead over Brighton at the top of the table and created some momentum about Rafa Benitez’s new look side.

All of a sudden the pre-season predictions of a quick-fire return to the Premier League are holding true but Perez won’t allow his thoughts to race too far ahead.

“We’re still top of the table, and now we’re thinking about the next game against Blackburn at home, and doing the same then,” he told the NUFC website after the win at Leeds.

“We’ve got to think about the next game, and think about what we have to do. We have to keep pushing and do our jobs. If we keep winning, we’re going to be up there.

“I’m working really hard to be in the team every week, and I’m trying to do my best. Hopefully I can be in team again next week, and we can get another win.”

Sunday’s win came after a two week break due to international fixtures with Perez as frustrated by the break as any fan.

Three international breaks so far this season haven’t did much to build momentum but with no more international fixtures until the end of March the club game takes centre stage.

β€œWe couldn’t wait any more to be on the pitch again,” he added, referring to the international break. β€œIt’s good that we had a great performance and did really well, and that’s why we won.

“It was a tough game for us, and we knew that they were doing really well. We had to perform and do our jobs to get the win, and we did that.

“Sometimes you have to fight to get the points – even more so when you’re playing away from home. We did really well today, we stuck together and managed to get the win.”

Despite their 3-2 win at home to Brentford on Saturday Blackburn, now managed by Owen Coyle, are sitting third from bottom of the table with 16 points from 17 matches.
