Steven Gerrard has emerged as a surprise candidate for the managerial vacancy at MK Dons.

The 36-year-old confirmed on Tuesday that he is returning to the UK after a stint with LA Galaxy.

That announcement sparked speculation as to the next move of the former England skipper who was instantly linked with moves to Newcastle, Celtic and Liverpool.

Gerrard has still to decide whether he wants to continue playing or move into coaching but the offer from MK Dons to take over from Karl Robinson may prove hard to resists.

Whilst at Anfield Gerrard started his coaching qualifications and is currently working on his UEFA A licence.

Reports from LA Galaxy suggested that the edge had gone from Gerrard’s game with the stats backing up that theory.

Rafa Benitez was Gerrard’s manager for six years at Anfield and is expected to be asked about bringing his former skipper to St James’ Park during tomorrow’s media conference to preview Sunday’s match away to Leeds United.
