Chelsea are interested in signing Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles, according to the Sun. Magpies boss Rafa Benitez gave the 22 year old the captaincy in the summer after the departure of Fabricio Coloccini and has become an essential first team member in Newcastle’s promotion push.

The Sun believes that Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is looking for homegrown talent in the January transfer window as he seeks to strengthen his three man back line. The Blues have also been linked to Burnley’s Michael Keane and Middlsebrough’s Ben Gibson but it seems Lascelles has also impressed Conte and is in contention for a move to Stamford Bridge.

The centre back is rated at £18million, according to reports, but it is unlikely Newcastle would be willing to sell a key player during the middle of the campaign as they seek to continue their momentum and retain their position at the top of the Championship table.
