Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has revealed that the club have had to change the treatment for full back Jesus Gamez’s calf injury. The 31 year old signed from Atletico Madrid on a free transfer in the summer but has been restricted to just two first team appearances for the Magpies since his arrival.

When asked by the Evening Chronicle about whether the right back would return to first team action after the international break, the Newcastle manager responded:

“Hopefully he can. When we signed him we were bringing in an experienced player in who can play on both sides of the defence. For us it has been a pity. But the good thing I would say about him was he was training every day and not missing anything. He was pushing himself. The bad thing was that it wasn’t enough so we decided to stop him and start another treatment and we’ll see if he’s fine now.”

Whether we see him in action soon will very much depend on how he reacts to the new treatment being administered. On signing, Benitez described the Spaniard as an “excellent professional.” Luckily for the Magpies, the form of DeAndre Yedlin since his arrival from Tottenham for £5million has mitigated the loss of Gamez, and Benitez has also been utilising Vurnon Anita in the position since the start of the season, demonstrating the Dutchman’s flexibility which the Spaniard is such a big fan of.
