Newcastle left back Paul Dummett says he has achieved his three main aims he had as a kid growing up wanting to play for the Magpies.

The 25 year old says his dream was not only to play for his boyhood club but also to score for them, as well as captain the side. He told the Evening Chronicle:

“Being a local boy and having grown up in Newcastle it was big. I watched Alan Shearer captain Newcastle as a kid over the years. I grew up just wanting to play for the club, that was one of my main aims. Scoring was another one, and being captain was a dream. So even if that doesn’t happen every again at least I can say I’ve done it for the club I supported as a boy.”

Dummett has been ever-present under manager Rafa Benitez this season at left back. With the arrivals of full backs Jesus Gamez from Atletico Madrid and Achraf Lazaar from Palermo over the summer, the Welsh international’s place in the side seemed to be at risk, but so far he has seen off the competition for his place in the team. Benitez has stated that both Gamez and Lazaar need time to adapt to the physicality of English football and so it looks likely Dummett will continue as first choice for a while yet.
