Barnsley manager Paul Heckingbottom says what impressed him most about Newcastle’s performance against his side was the level of effort and graft they were prepared to put in to the match.

The Magpies defeated Heckingbottom’s side 2-0 but only after they battled through a tough first half where the Tykes fought toe to toe with their opponents. It demonstrates that Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has instilled a strong work ethic into his players and Heckingbottom was quoted by the Shields Gazette as saying the Magpies gave nothing away during the match:

“I’ve been impressed with the way in which this Newcastle team has proved it’s prepared to dig in and work in order to get a result. “It was a similar story at Rotherham, although I watched that game and with respect to Rotherham, I thought we had a right go at them even more than they did. They gave us nothing.”

Considering Newcastle are expected to walk this league if you go by what some pundits are saying, it is testament to Rafa’s managerial abilities that the players are not believing the hype and putting in the hard yards to get results rather than allowing complacency to set in.

There is however three quarters of the season to go so it will be interesting to see how the players react if they do begin to stretch out some sort of gap between them and their rivals at the top of the table.
