Newcastle forward Ayoze Perez says he is growing in confidence after his recent flurry of goals for the the Magpies. The Spaniard has been criticised, including by Micky Quinn, in the past for his lack of goals but he has certainly made an impact on he scoresheet in the last couple of matches.

Prior to last weekend’s match against Ipswich Town at St James’ Park, the 23 year old had managed just one goal in the league, but after scoring the fastest Championship goal of the season against the Tractor Boys, he scored a second to help seal a 3-0 victory for the Magpies.

He followed that brace up with another in the 6-0 win over Preston North End mid week after coming off the bench. Perez told the Shields Gazette that confidence is beginning to flow:

“I am getting better. I am scoring goals, which is important for me because the confidence grows a little more. It is nice to score. We now have a game on Saturday, we have to be focused and see what happens.”

Perez will have to fight off the likes of Mo Diame for a place in the side for the match against Preston at Deepdale tomorrow. The Spaniard played in a deeper number 10 role against Ipswich and Diame scored two goals in the same position in mid week. Rafa Benitez will need to resolve that selection dilemma before tomorrow’s match.
