Shearer hopes crucial appointment is beginning to pay off

|

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer is hoping that Rafa Benitez’s decision to stay with the Magpies will begin to pay off as the season goes on.

Shearer believes the freedom that the Spaniard has to sign his own players and have greater control over management at the club will begin to pay dividends. He told the Evening Chronicle:

“I hope him staying is starting to pay off. He’s doing what he wants to do, managing the team and bringing in the players in he wants, so hopefully yes I think it’s been very good to keep him. You’d have to ask him [if buying his own players was important] but in general I’d assume very much so, yes.”

Due to the international break, the Magpies are currently in the middle of a two week period without club matches. They will be hoping however to keep the momentum going after a remarkable 4-3 victory over promotion rivals Norwich City was followed up by a battling 1-0 win versus Rotherham United in their last fixture.

Their next match will be a difficult one though as they come up against seventh placed Brentford who are currently sit just four points behind the Magpies. It will be a a 3pm kick off at St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon.
