Newcastle have ‘cracked’ hoodoo

Former Newcastle player Micky Quinn believes the current Magpies side has finally found a solution for the club’s perennially poor away form.

One of the key factors in the club’s relegation last season was the failure to pick up enough points away from home, either under Steve McClaren or Rafa Benitez, but writing in his column for the Chronicle, Quinn believes Newcastle’s problematic away form goes back a lot further.

“That’s something which has been missing from the football club going right back to my playing days.We used to try all sorts to change our fortunes away from home – it was a real planes, trains and automobiles as we looked for a way of getting success on the road. But this side looked to have cracked it, which is great.”

The Magpies have only lost once away from home this season, and that was on the opening day against Fulham back in August. Since then they have racked up five wins against Bristol City, Derby County, QPR, Rotherham and Barnsley and one draw against Aston Villa, with just two goals being conceded.

They will want to improve their home form though with two losses in seven matches, and they will have a good opportunity to do just that when they face Ipswich Town at St James Park on Saturday.
