Luton Town manager Nathan Jones is tipping Newcastle loanee Alex Gilliead to become a Premier League level player.

Gilliead joined Luton on transfer deadline day in a loan deal back in August but has struggled for game time since joining the Hatters with just two league starts and five league substitute appearances. His impressive display in his second league start against Leyton Orient in a 2-1 win at the weekend prompted Jones to tell Luton Today:

“I know what he has because I have watched him since he was 16, 17 years of age, I’ve always had an eye on him. He is a thoroughbred and I genuinely believe he will become a Premier League player.”

Gilliead is 20 years of age but has yet to feature in a match for Newcastle’s senior side. The fact that he has only started two games for Luton this season is concerning but the winger was one of the stand out performers for League Two side Carlisle United last season with five goals and eight assists in 40 appearances in all competitions. Whether he can reach the heights that Jones believes he can though remains to be seen.
