A Newcastle scout was in Belgium last week to watch Sassuolo’s match against Racing Genk in the Europa League group stage according to Voetbalnieuws.be.
The Belgian website say that the Magpies were there to observe Sassuolo striker Gregoire Defrel, who has also been interesting Arsenal and Liverpool if reports in the Italian media are to be believed.
Defrel has had an excellent start to his league campaign in Serie A with four goals and three assists in six matches, and he has also been in good form in the Europa League with a goal in the first group stage match against Athletic Bilbao in a 3-0 victory.
The Magpies scout may have not been as impressed with the 25 year old against Genk on Thursday night however as he was not able to help as Sassuolo slumped to a 3-1 defeat in Belgium.
Defrel can also play on the right wing, and is known for his dribbling ability and pace. He could be seen as a replacement for fellow Frenchman Yoan Gouffran whose contract expires at the end of the current season.
